NewtonPlus: Approximating Relativistic Effects in Supernova Simulations
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose an approximation to full relativity that captures the main gravitational effects of dynamical importance in supernovae. The conceptual link between this formalism and the Newtonian limit is such that it could likely be implemented relatively easily in existing multidimensional Newtonian gravitational hydrodynamics codes employing a Poisson solver. As a test of the formalism’s utility, we display results for rapidly rotating (and therefore highly deformed) neutron stars. 04.25-g, 95.30.Sf, 97.60.Bw, 95.30.Lz Typeset using REVTEX

New Equations of State in Simulations of Core-collapse Supernovae
We discuss three new equations of state (EOS) in core-collapse supernova simulations. The new EOS are based on the nuclear statistical equilibrium model of Hempel and Schaffner-Bielich (HS), which includes excluded volume effects and relativistic mean-field (RMF) interactions. We consider the RMF parameterizations TM1, TMA, and FSUgold. These EOS are implemented into our spherically symmetric c...
متن کاملNew Methods for Approximating General Relativity in Numerical Simulations of Stellar Core Collapse
We review various approaches to approximating general relativistic effects in hydrodynamic simulations of stellar core collapse and post-bounce evolution. Different formulations of a modified Newtonian gravitational potential are presented. Such an effective relativistic potential can be used in an otherwise standard Newtonian hydrodynamic code. An alternative approximation of general relativit...
متن کاملGeneral Relativity and Neutrino - Driven Supernova Winds ∗
To date, detailed core-collapse supernova simulations have not succeeded in elucidating the explosion mechanism. But whatever the mechanism turns out to be, there will be a neutrino-heated outflow between the hot, newly-born neutron star and the outgoing supernova shock wave whose neutron richness, low density, and high temperature could provide promising conditions for the synthesis of heavy n...
متن کاملSupernova Simulations with Boltzmann Neutrino Transport: a Comparison of Methods
Accurate neutrino transport has been built into spherically symmetric simulations of stellar core collapse and postbounce evolution. The results of such simulations agree that spherically symmetric models with standard microphysical input fail to explode by the delayed, neutrino-driven mechanism. Independent groups implemented fundamentally different numerical methods to tackle the Boltzmann ne...

We study the explosion mechanism of collapse-driven supernovae by numerical simulations with a new nuclear EOS based on unstable nuclei. We report new results of simulations of general relativistic hydrodynamics together with the Boltzmann neutrino-transport in spherical symmetry. We adopt the new data set of relativistic EOS and the conventional set of EOS (Lattimer-Swesty EOS) to examine the ...
